Alumni Champions — Overview
Purpose
Define what Alumni Champions are, why they exist, and the posture we use when inviting alumni into the program.
When to use
- Champion landing pages and onboarding
- Role education pages
- Internal alignment (training, partner communications)
- Product copy where “Champions” are explained
Core idea (thesis)
Alumni Champions are Bruins who foster belonging in the alumni community by offering connection, engagement, and support.
This is not a title.
It is a way of showing up.
Why Alumni Champions exist
Meaningful alumni networks do not happen by accident.
They happen when alumni step up for one another.
Many alumni want to stay connected but do not know how.
Some have lost touch.
Some wish someone had reached out during a transition.
Some want to help but need a starting place.
Champions create that starting place.
What Champions actually do
Champions do simple, tangible things that create ripple effects:
- host gatherings
- open doors through introductions and mentoring
- celebrate wins and share stories
- encourage generosity with gratitude and clarity
Program posture (how we invite)
- Invitational: we speak as hosts, not recruiters.
- Illustrative: we paint pictures of real-life actions.
- Empowering: we emphasize flexibility and agency.
- Recognitional: we name how someone is already showing up, then offer a next step.
“Stay Connected. Make an Impact.”
This phrase is the rallying shorthand:
- Stay Connected: don’t drift into isolation after graduation.
- Make an Impact: use your relationships, influence, and generosity to help someone else take their next step.
Portal implications
- Champions should always have a clear next action they can take today.
- Role definitions must be concrete and easy to imagine.
- Copy should celebrate everyday wins, not just “big” leadership.
- The portal should make it easy to start small and grow over time.
