Communications for the Champion Portal — Purpose and Posture
Purpose
Define the communications philosophy that should shape how the Champion Portal informs, celebrates, and invites alumni into meaningful action.
When to use
- Writing or reviewing in-app copy, microcopy, and CTAs
- Designing “news,” “updates,” prompts, and nudges inside the portal
- Creating Champion role resources that involve outreach and storytelling
- Reviewing notification strategy (email/SMS/in-app) for tone and intent
Core purpose (portal lens)
Communications inside the portal exist to keep alumni connected to the life of Belmont and to provide clear, concrete invitations into meaningful action.
This includes:
- Informing: what’s happening and what’s available
- Celebrating: people, stories, milestones, everyday wins
- Inviting: specific next steps that are doable in real life
Communications North Stars (portal-relevant)
These “identity messages” should show up implicitly in portal content and invitations:
- Belmont values its status as a member of the Nashville community and strives to keep an outward-facing posture.
- Belmont is setting an example for philanthropic efforts.
- Alumni succeed when they utilize our extensive alumni network.
Portal posture (non-negotiables)
- Specificity over inspiration: give real actions, not generic motivation.
- Invitation over pressure: avoid guilt, urgency manipulation, and obligation framing.
- Alumni as heroes: alumni are the protagonists; Belmont/Alumni Team is the guide that clarifies and connects.
- Connection-first: prioritize alumni-to-alumni connection and community formation.
Practical portal implications
- Every “content unit” in the portal should answer:
- What is this?
- Why does it matter (in human terms)?
- What can I do next (one clear step)?
- Default to language that:
- celebrates and recognizes
- reduces friction to participate
- makes the next action feel small and achievable
- Avoid claims the portal cannot prove (outcomes, stats, sweeping promises).
